Generally speaking, the free antivirus programs will use fewer resources than the paid ones, but they will also have fewer features. This can be a advantage with computers with less than a couple of gb of memory or older processors. It can be a necessity if using an older (Windows XP or Vista) operating system.
Avast: Avast free antivirus is my personal choice. I actually paid for it on my two computers, first because I want to support good technology, and second because Avast Free is only legal on strictly personal use machines.
